Overview

AlphaFold: Solving Protein Structure Prediction (2018-2022)

Core Positions
Section titled “Core Positions”Acknowledgment of existential risk: Hassabis has stated his personal assessment of p(doom) is “non-zero” and “worth very seriously considering and mitigating against.” He is listed alongside Geoffrey Hinton, Yoshua Bengio, and other AI leaders who have warned about potential existential risks from advanced AI. In his TIME 2025 interview, he stated: “We don’t know enough about [AI] yet to actually quantify the risk. It might turn out that as we develop these systems further, it’s way easier to keep control of them than we expected. But in my view, there’s still significant risk.”
Near-term concerns: In a December 2025 Axios interview, Hassabis emphasized that some “catastrophic outcomes” are already a “clear and present danger,” specifically citing AI-enabled cyberattacks on energy and water infrastructure: “That’s probably almost already happening now… maybe not with very sophisticated AI yet, but I think that’s the most obvious vulnerable vector.” He also identified the creation of pathogens by malicious actors and excessive autonomy of AI agents as pressing dangers.
AGI timeline: Hassabis’s timeline estimates have consistently shortened. At the December 2024 Nobel ceremony, he estimated “five to ten years.” By February 2025 at the Paris AI Action Summit, he stated the industry was “perhaps five years away” from AGI. He has stated a “50/50 chance that by 2031 there will be an AI system capable of achieving scientific breakthroughs equivalent in magnitude to the discovery of general relativity.” On what’s still needed for AGI, he told TIME: “I suspect when we look back once AGI is done that one or two of those things were still required, in addition to scaling”—referring to breakthroughs at “a Transformer level or AlphaGo level.”
Call for global governance: Hassabis advocates for international AI coordination comparable to nuclear arms treaties: “This affects everyone. AI must be governed globally, not just by companies or nations.” He warns of a potential “race to the bottom for safety” where competition between countries or corporations pushes developers to skip critical guardrails. At the Paris summit, he noted: “Rules to control AI only work when most nations agree to them… Just look at climate. There seems to be less cooperation. That doesn’t bode well.”
Climate change comparison: At the December 2024 Nobel ceremony, Hassabis drew a pointed parallel: “It took the international community too long to coordinate an effective global response to [climate change], and we’re living with the consequences of that now. We can’t afford the same delay with AI.”
DeepMind Safety Research
Section titled “DeepMind Safety Research”DeepMind has published extensively on AI safety, including a 145-page safety paper in April 2025 titled “An Approach to Technical AGI Safety and Security,” warning that human-level AI could plausibly arrive by 2030 and could “permanently destroy humanity” if mishandled. The paper was co-authored by DeepMind co-founder Shane Legg.
The April 2025 paper identifies four key risk areas: misuse, misalignment, mistakes, and structural risks. For misuse, the strategy aims to prevent threat actors from accessing dangerous capabilities through robust security, access restrictions, and monitoring. For misalignment, the paper outlines two lines of defense: model-level mitigations (amplified oversight, robust training) and system-level security measures (monitoring, access control). The paper contrasts DeepMind’s approach with competitors, stating that Anthropic places less emphasis on “robust training, monitoring, and security,” while OpenAI is “overly bullish on automating alignment research.”
Frontier Safety Framework

Isomorphic Labs and Drug Discovery
