Overview
Section titled “Overview”This model traces the progression from AI augmentation to irreversible human skill loss and dependency. It identifies five distinct phases, each with characteristic dynamics, and analyzes when transitions become irreversible.
Central Insight: The path from “helpful tool” to “critical dependency” is gradual, predictable, and potentially irreversible.
The Five-Phase Model

Phase 3: Atrophy (Years 5-15)

Atrophy Mechanisms:
1. Neural Reorganization
- Brain regions supporting skills shrink with disuse
- Example: London taxi drivers’ hippocampi vs. GPS users
- Reversibility: Possible but requires extended practice (months-years)
2. Procedural Memory Decay
- “How to” knowledge fades faster than “what” knowledge
- Critical for emergency response
- Relearning requires extensive practice, not just review
3. Calibration Loss
- Lose intuition for what’s “reasonable”
- Can’t sanity-check AI outputs
- Example: Accepting navigation route that’s obviously wrong
Critical Threshold: When human skill level drops below the level needed to:
- Detect AI errors
- Handle AI failures
- Operate in degraded modes
This creates dependency trap: Can’t safely use AI (can’t verify) and can’t safely not use AI (can’t perform).
Warning Signs:
- Failures when AI unavailable (outages, novel situations)
- AI errors not caught
- Difficulty training new workers in fundamentals
- Experts retiring with knowledge not transferred
Risk Level: High
- Skills recovering would require major investment
- System vulnerable to AI failures
- Dependency likely permanent without intervention
Transition to Phase 4 Triggers:
- Full generational turnover (no pre-AI experts remain)
- Institutional changes complete (training assumes AI)
- Economic infeasibility of maintaining human capability
Phase 4: Dependency (Years 10-20)

The Irreversibility Problem:
Recovering human capability would require:
- Retraining entire workforce (years, expensive)
- Accepting productivity decline (economically painful)
- Rebuilding training infrastructure (institutions)
- Tolerating failure during transition (politically difficult)
- Coordinating across society (collective action problem)
Assessment: Likely politically and economically infeasible.
Warning Signs:
- Major disruptions when AI fails
- No backup plans that work
- “Too big to fail” applied to AI systems
- Existential dependence acknowledged but accepted

- Create “seed banks” of human expertise
